CHAN Kwan-lok‭ ‬
陳 鈞 樂

Chan Kwan-lok (lives and works in Hong Kong) graduated from the Fine Arts Department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2015. Chan explores the viability of line by depicting the movements of humans and nature. Using rhythmic lines to construct a rigorous yet subtle framework, Chan portrays ordinary objects, people, and marine creatures in whimsical fantasies.

Since 2013, Chan has been featured in numerous group exhibitions in Hong Kong, Taipei, Macau, and mainland China, including Fine Art Asia (2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020), Art Taipei (2015), Ink Asia (2015, 2016, 2017, 2019), and Art Basel Hong Kong (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020). He has also held four solo exhibitions. Chan received several awards at CUHK and his works are mostly held by private collections.

陳鈞樂,香港居住及工作,2015年畢業於香港中文大學藝術系。陳氏專注研究繪畫線條的可能性,尤喜愛描繪人群和大自然景象的動態。取材自日常事物的隨意聯想,他善用富有節奏感的線條建構細緻嚴謹的畫面,泳者或遊人,海浪與游魚,呈現趣味盎然的異想世界。

自2013年起,陳氏在香港、台北、澳門及中國等地參與多個聯展,包括「典亞藝博」(2015, 2016, 2017, 2019,2020),「台北國際藝術博覽會2015」,「水墨藝博」(2015,2016,2017,2019),及「香港巴塞爾藝術展」(2016,2017,2018,2019,2020)等。陳氏在香港中文大學就讀期間獲得多個獎項,曾舉辦四次個展,作品多為私人收藏 。

Artist’s Statement 

My creative work comes from life experience, to which I add imaginative elements. It reflects my experiences and the things happening in society. I first encountered fine-brush painting while I was in university. While we were doing exercises, I was fascinated by traditional line drawings. Those fine lines had to be painted in a calm state of mind.

I walk alone in the mountains to sort out my thoughts, and I see microcosms of myself and society in the forest. I have chosen to work with new subject matter here; the four exhibited works focus on the search for a new home, inspired by flying spiders. These creatures ride the wind and follow their own silk to faraway places. Braving predators and bad weather on their journeys, they fly onward. If they’re lucky, they will find a new place to live. 

Beginning with Mist, the paintings feature delicate spiderwebs, pervasive mist, and intertwining branches, which create a semi-transparent effect that reflects the uncertainty and confusion one experiences on leaving one’s hometown. Snake and Frog presents a frog unaware of the snake that is preparing to eat it, highlighting the danger that threatens the creature. Entrance contrasts the density of the forest with the void in the centre of the painting, creating an entrance to an unknown new world (outside the painting). The buildings in Shelter are still under construction and incomplete; we need an accumulation of time and life experience to find a place where we can feel at ease. 

We all have our own reasons for setting out on a journey and resolutely leaving behind where we grew up. When we travel far across the sea, we may arrive at a new place where we can find some respite. 


藝術家自述

創作是源自生活的經驗,再加入想像元素。反映自身的經歷,和社會發生的事。大學時首次接觸工筆畫,臨摹練習時被傳統線描稿所吸引,細密的線條,必須要在平靜的狀態下繪畫。

在獨自行山的時間中疏理自己的思緒,也從樹林中看到了自身和社會的縮影。今次嘗試了新題材,四張作品上透過樹木、動物和昆蟲的故事,以尋找新的安居之所為題。作品是用飛天蜘蛛為靈感,大自然中蜘蛛乘風勢,沿着自身吐絲飛往遠方,途中冒着被捕食者吃掉或惡劣天氣的驚險,但仍往前飛,幸運的話或會到達新領域生活。

由《霧》開始,畫面留下蜘蛛網,佈滿雲霧,樹枝互纏,呈半透明感,想呈現離開原生地的不確定和迷惘;《蛇與蛙》以蛇準備捕食而青蛙不自知的畫面,帶出在身處地方的危機感;《入口》,用樹林的密度對照畫面中心的空白位,建構出一個進入未知新地(畫外)的入口;《安居》中的建築物是尚在建構、未完整,需要時間及生活經驗累積才能完成的安心居所。

每人都有啟程的原因,毅然離開自己成長的地方,飄洋過海,到一個全新的地方尋找自己的安居。
