Artist’s Statement

Gongbi painting requires calm and focus. For me, it is like a key that opens a door to another universe. On the foundation of gongbi painting, I blend in other materials or contemporary cultural references. I do not want to have my imaginative possibilities restricted by traditional frameworks; I hope to bring my work closer to my life and desires.

The Dwarves Who Borrow Words
This bookcase, comprised of little compartments containing different books and objects, can be assembled in different ways. This series diverges from my previous presentations of text in the form of doggerel. Based on the thought that recurring whispers in your heart can evolve into subconscious ideas that are eventually expressed in real-life situations, I display different phrases and sentences in horizontal and vertical text. These are the fourth and fifth sections in the series.

Flowers and Vessels
When a vessel becomes a flower’s resting place, the flower defines the vessel as a flower vessel, representing another kind of coexistence. How should flowers and their vessels be paired? This series attempts to find a suitable vessel for different flowers and considers the relationship between people and their surroundings.
